NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM
The National Maritime Museum (NMM) was formally established by Act of Parliament

There is also a small museum at Cotehele Quay on the Tamar, Cornwall, with the

collection on Tresco, Isles of Scilly. The collections comprise about two million
items, many on loan to museums elsewhere in Britain. The public galleries at Greenwich

Arte Maya Tz'utuhil
In three of the hundreds of communities that make up the vast Mayan population of present
day Guatemala Indian artists produce oil paintings about Mayan life. Those communities are
Cakchiquel-speaking San Juan Comalapa, and the Tz'utuhil-speaking towns of Santiago
Atitlan and San Pedro la Laguna. At present this website deals only with the
Tz'utuhil-speaking artists, and mainly with the artists from San Pedro la Laguna and its

Royal Ontario Museum

Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery
William Hunter was born at Long Calderwood Farm, East Kilbride, near Glasgow in 1718. He came as a student to
Glasgow University in 1731 and later studied medicine at Edinburgh, before going to London in 1741. Hunter
quickly became well-known as a physician, especially as an obstetrician, and built up a distinguished clientŹle,
including members of the Royal Family. He soon assembled a collection of anatomical and pathological specimens,
related to his medical work. In the 1750s he began collecting art and later diversified into coins, books, manuscripts
and ethnography. In 1768 he opened a medical school at his house in Great Windmill Street. In 1783 Hunter
bequeathed the entire collection to Glasgow University, along with funds to construct a suitable Museum building.
The collection was completed and opened to the public in 1807: Scotland's first public museum.

The founding of the Vatican Museums can be traced back to 1503 when the newly-elected Pope, Julius II della Rovere,

John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art
The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art is known throughout the world for its rich and varied
collections. It was planned by the Ringlings to be part of a grand legacy. They built their winter home,

Artic Circle's Museum of Art, Photography, and Anthropology
The idea culminating in Arctic Circle originated during a symposium on 'The Use of the World Wide Web in Education,' sponsored by the Faculty Resource Laboratory at the University of
Connecticut in February of 1995. Following a presentation by Thomas Plunkett and Jonathan Lizee, co-developers of ArchNet, the WWW Virtual Library for Archaeology, they were
joined by Norman Chance, an arctic anthropologist, interested in finding ways to expand knowledge of the Circumpolar North to a wider audience of students, educators, policy makers,
environmental planners, and others. Together, we came up with the concept of an 'electronic' Arctic Circle. After a month of planning, we sought the support of the Director of the
University of Connecticut's Homer Babbidge Library. Shortly thereafter, Arctic Circle settled into its new home on the "Spirit of Uconn' library server.

Montclair Art Museum

P. Buckley Moss Museum
Patricia Buckley was born on May 20th, 1933, in the Richmond Borough of
New York City. She was the second of three children of an
Irish/American-Sicilian Marriage. In grade school, young Patricia was perceived
as a poor student, a circumstance probably attributable to dyslexia which is a
generally misunderstood reading and perceptional "disorder". Nonetheless, one
of her teachers determined that this little girl who was "Not Proficient In
Anything" was artistically gifted. This outside opinion helped to convince Pat's
mother to enroll her daughter in an extraordinary public school for girls in
downtown Manhattan: the Washington Irving High School for the Fine Arts. It
was there, in what obviously was a friendly learning environment, that Pat's
artistic abilities were finally encouraged and seriously nourished.

Wharton Esherick Museum
Dean of American Craftsmen
In the decade before he died in 1970 at the age of 83, Wharton Esherick of Paoli,
Pennsylvania, was heralded by the national art and design community as the "Dean
of American Craftsmen." It was an accolade not previously bestowed on an
American artist and an indication of the unique nature of Esherick's work and
influence. Ironically, much of his career was spent in relative isolation; a lone
artisan pursuing his own vision of high-art craftsmanship during a period when
hand craftsmanship was generally held in low regard by American culture.
Ultimately, Esherick's work helped lead to the renaissance of the 196 hat
re-established hand craftsmanship as the popular and highly-valued activity it is
today.

Guggenheim Museums

The Acropolis Museum
It is one of the most important museums in the world. It temporarily houses masterpieces of the ancient Greek
civilization, dedicated to the most important of the Athenian sanctuaries, the "temenos" of Athena Parthenos.
Preparations for the erection of the New Acropolis Museum have already begun. Many of the unique works of art that ornamented the
Acropolis have been stolen and transferred abroad. The worst plundering of the monuments took place in the
beginning of the 19th century by Lord Elgin.
Frye Art Museum

Butterfly Lodge Museum
Butterfly Lodge was built in Greer in 1914. The cabin's name ("Apuni Oyis" in
Blackfoot) was inspired by the countless butterflies in the nearby meadows. It was the
mountain residence and hunting lodge of James Willard Schultz (1859 - 1947) and his son,
Hart Merriam Schultz, known as Lone Wolf (1882-1970).
The lodge housed two colorful careers: the father's fashioned in words, the son's through
painted images and sculptures of the West. They were two free spirits who found
inspiration in this little cabin in the high mountains of Greer.
The Norton Museum of Art
THE Norton Museum of Art was founded in 1941 by Ralph Hubbard Norton (1875-1953) and
his wife Elizabeth Calhoun Norton (1881-1947). An industrialist who headed the Acme Steel
Company in Chicago, Mr. Norton retired in 1939 to make his permanent home in West Palm
Beach, Florida.
For many years, Ralph and Elizabeth Norton had been actively interested in fine arts and had
accumulated a sizeable collection of paintings and sculpture. Upon moving south, the Nortons
decided to share their collection with the public.

Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco
FIFTY YEARS OF sustained growth, supported by an amazing coalition of donors,
artists, and support groups requires appropriate celebration. The Fine Arts Museums of
San Francisco are now mounting a major display of art from the Achenbach Foundation
for Graphic Arts. None of these works have been shown recently: although Curator
Robert Flynn Johnson assembled 240 "Treasures of the Achenbach" (November 1995)
to celebrate the reopening of the Legion of Honor and 125 "Recent Acquisitions" less
than a year ago (June 1997), the collection is so rich that he has selected 125 more
works not seen in those exhibitions. More than 25 of them have been acquired since last

WebMuseum, Paris
The WebMuseum was not made as part of any official or supported project. There's not grant behind that, it is total pleasureware (tm). I decided to start
working on this exhibit because I felt more artistic stuff was needed on the Internet, so the WebMuseum took over my free time (nights and week-ends...)
since mid-march 1994. Some companies may be trying to get a monopolistic grab on arts and culture, developing a pay-per-view logic, shipping out CD-ROMs while trying to patent
stuff which belongs to each of us: a part of our human civilization and history.
This exhibit is not trying to compete in any way with books or specialized CD-ROMs. Such an Internet exhibit will neither reach the quality of paper
reproduction and professional critic, nor will it be as easily available as a local CD-ROM, given the transfer time on the Internet.
No support, no funding, no manpower: the WebMuseum is a collaborative work of its visitors contributing to expand and improve
the WebMuseum.
Diego Rivera Web Museum
DIEGO RIVERA (1886-l957), muralist painter, was one of the greatest artists in the XXth century.
Born in Guanajuato Mexico, in 1892 he moved to Mexico City with his family. He studied in the San
Carlos Academy and in the carving workshop of artist JosŽ Guadalupe Posada, whose influence was
decisive. Later in Paris, he received the influence of post-modernism and cubism, the mediums in which
he expressed himself with ease. Diego Rivera with the use of classicist, simplified and colorful painting
recovered the pre-columbian past catching the most significant moments in mexican history: the earth,
the farmer, the laborer, the custumes and popular characters. Diego Rivera 's legacy to modern mexican
art was decisive in murals and canvas; he was a revolutionary painter looking to take art to the big
public, to streets and buildings, managing a precise, direct, and realist style, full of social content.

The founding of the Vatican Museums can be traced back to 1503 when the newly-elected Pope, Julius II, placed a statue of Apollo

Anchorage museum of History & Art

Bochum Museum - Art Collection
It was only in 1960, with the opening of the museum in the Villa Markhoff, a late
nineteenth century relic of Bochum's heyday as a mining town, that a systematic
